Arimaa is designed using the same board and pieces in a normal chess set but with Arimaa, the number of moves increase exponentially, to that of over 500 times that of Chess.
In Arimaa, the medieval pieces are replaced by a hierach of animals - the Elephant (King), Camel (Queen), Horse(Rooks), Dog(Bishops), Cat (Knights) and Rabbit (Pawns). The goal of the game is to either remove all your opponent's rabbits or to get 1 Rabbit to the other end of the board.
Each turn, a player has 4 moves that they can make in Arimaa. Pieces can move forward, side to side and backward (except for Rabbits) and may push / pull another piece by using 2 movements. In addition, there are 4 pits in the game that can remove opponent pieces.
As can be seen, Arimaa is an abstract game with simple rules but a high level of complexity as the number of moves and permutations possible each turn is very high. As such, Arimaa offers levels of depth of strategy even greater than traditional Chess.
The version of Arimaa sold on the sight also has a normal Chess board on the back, allowing players to play a game of Chess as well if so desired.
