Settlers of Catan Quick Guide: Part II
Having dealt with the Settlers of Catan series by itself in Part I of our quick guide, we are now discussing the various other Settlers of Catan stand-alone board games. Many have been developed by Klaus Teuber himself, but some have not.Catan Histories Series
In the Catan Histories series, the broad Settlers game play is transferred across a historical perspective, allowing players to play in their favourite time period using known gameplay elements.
Settlers of Zarahemla Based on the popular Settlers of Catan game, the Settlers of Zarahemla sets players in the world and time of the early American prophets Alma, Mosiah and Samuel the Lamanite. Not technically an authorized Settlers game, the Settlers of Zarahemla plays very similar to the Settlers original board game and is no longer in print.
Settlers of Canaan Settlers of Canaan uses the same basic mechanics as Settlers of Catan but adds some unique elements, similar to the Historical Scenarios. In the case of this game, players build the wall of Jerusalem by contributing bricks. The player who contributes the most bricks earns victory points and the right to use a special "rule-breaking" power of his/her choosing. This is contested in the same manner as "the longest road" from Settlers.
Struggle for Rome An official Settlers expansion, Struggle for Rome is a 4-player stand-alone game based after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Players start out as 1 of 4 barbarian hordes on the edge of the city with two different armies that they are able to move. Using a simple arrow system to indicate length of movement, players are able to traverse the Roman Empire to pillage cities. To win the game though, the barbarians will need to conquer a city and settle down to become rulers, expanding their settlements instead of pillaging cities for goods. A fun, interesting change to the Settlers of Catan series, it provides new rules and strategies to the popular game.
Settlers of the Stone Age In Settlers of the Stone Age, players take on the role of different tribes who must evolve certain talents to help spread across the world. Failure to do so will slow the spread of your tribe, allowing other players to get ahead of you as they flow across the world.
Settlers of America The Settlers of America is the latest Catan Histories expansion with similar gameplay as Settlers of Catan, but with the usage of the map of America. In addition, 'Gold' is an added resource and a new 'depletion' mechanic for resources has been introduced.
Stand Alone Games
Kids of Catan Kids of Catan is the children’s version of the popular Catan game. In Kid of Catan, the game is broken down into the basic game of collecting resources to create buildings. A quick game that can be completed within 15 minute, the Kids of Catan is a great introductory, big-block game for children.
Candamir: The First Settlers of Catan Candamir steps outside of the normal Settlers of Catan model and is a role-playing/character development game that places the player in the role of a settler. You are building your Settler as the game goes on, making decisions of which skills and abilities to improve to best build your own settlement.
Elasund the First City In Elasund, players are no longer outside building settlements and cities but are placed in the very first City of Catan. In Elasund, players will compete to become the most influential city developer by developing neighborhoods and competing to have the largest and most important buildings.
Rivals for Catan The Rivals for Catan Card Game is an award winning modeling of the Settlers of Catan board game into a 2-player card game. A revision of the older Catan Card Game, the Rivals for Catan has players develop their cities and their settlements from a deck, played across one another. There are some major differences in the game-play including the creation of a board as each settlement and road is built as well as the ability to more directly affect other players. This is a very popular 2-player medium to heavy strategy card game.
Struggle for Catan The Struggle for Catan Card Game is a 2 - 4 player card game version of the Settlers of Catan. This makes the game much more portable, while adding a new dimension to the play as the vast majority of the pieces and resources are indicated using cards.

Catan Dice Game The Catan dice game is a quick and easy dice game based on the Catan model of settlement building. Players roll dice to develop different buildings, with the dice indcating the resources that they have managed to develop that turn. Players can continue to roll their dice to score higher valued buildings each turn but must be careful not to push their luck too far. The Catan Dice Game is quick introduction to the general Catan world.
Settlers of Catan Travel Edition This is the base settlers of Catan game produced in a smaller, more compact box with an inlaid map to ensure ease of travel. The travel edition cannot be expanded to 6 players.
Starfarers of Catan While keeping the resource and colony development aspects of Settlers of Catan, Starfarers has added the 'Mothership' that players must travel along to develop their colonies. An interesting variation of the base Settlers game, many players still consider the base game more interesting.
Starfarers of Catan has a 5 & 6 player expansion that can be added to the game.
Starship Catan Starship Catan is a two-player card game of interstellar exploration based on the popular Starfarers of Catan stand-alone game. Players explore decks of cards for potential colonies, trading deals, opportunities to help planets, and either avoid or combat pirates. Players can upgrade their ships' systems, including weapons to combat the pirates, thrusters to be able to explore further each turn, scanners to see (and avoid) cards that are coming up, and several other options. Overall, the game plays more like the Settlers of Catan card game than the original Starfarers of Catan.
