Theme : In Kingsburg the board game, players take on the role of governors of various principalities in the kingdom of Kingsburg. You will need to work through the King and his advisors to gain the resources you require to develop your province, building it as you feel fit, but with always an eye to the marauding monsters that arrive each winter. Can you progress your province while keeping the monsters at bay?
Gameplay : Kingsburg is a mixture of a heavily themed fantasy game and a Euro resource development game. Players each take control of a single province and must decide which of 5 development tracks to begin construction on. Each building in the development track provides variable victory points and in-game benefits, with buildings at the end of a development track providing the greatest benefit.
Each turn, players roll three (3) dice and take turns placing them on the game board of advisors. Each placement allows a player to use that advisor (and his ability) for that round, with abilities providing anything from additional influence points (+2 die roll counters), resources and victory points.
At the end of each year (in winter) - the game running across 5 years, 3 productive seasons (turns) per year - players face the oncoming hordes of marauding monsters. With a variable strength and aid from the King each year, players must be careful not to lose out in these battles - either by developing the fortification to see these enemies off or building up their army throughout the years.
Overall, Kingsburg is a great light to medium weight strategy game that is fun to play with a light degree of interaction and resource management.
