Theme : In Cave Troll, each player gains control of a party of explorers exploring the lair of the Cave Troll. Each party consists of knights, dwarves, thieves, barbarians and other heroes. Using these heroes, players must search the lair for gold and other magical artifacts while avoiding the fearsome Cave Troll and other heroes.
Cave Troll is a fast-paced area-control board game set in a dungeon from Tom Jolly, the creator of Drakon.
Gameplay : Cave Troll is a fast playing area control game that is easy to learn, but with multiple decisions and a variable scoring method, highly replayable.
Players must move their heroes to take control of each room (by having more heroes in the room during scoring than the opponent) but with only 5 figures maximum in a room, must be careful how to move each hero and monster. Monsters and heroes also have special abilities that can be used that allow heroes to push heroes out, kill monsters and other options. Addtioinally, the Cave Troll card comes into play by kicking out all heroes from a room and 'blocking' the room from being used again during that game.
Scoring is randomised by the inclusion of a 'scoring' marker on each deck of cards provided to the players. Once 5 cards with a scoring marker have been played, scoring will occur, providing players some control over when to score the board.
Overall, Cave Troll is a fast-playing, thematic area control game set in a fantasy, dungeon crawl setting that is light enough for beginning players but with some interesting strategic options.
