Theme : Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition is a board game in which one player takes on the role of the treacherous overlord, and up to four other players take on the roles of courageous heroes. Featuring double-sided modular board pieces, countless hero and skill combinations, and an immersive story-driven campaign, Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition transports heroes to a vibrant fantasy realm where they must stand together against an ancient evil.
This updated version of the classic board game of dungeon-delving adventure features a host of enhancements, including new heroes and monsters, streamlined rules, a class-based hero system, campaign play, and much more.
Gameplay : Descent : Journey's in the Dark is a dungeon-crawl game using the Doom combat mechanics and movement system. Players take on the role of one of many adventurers, moving through a dungeon in search of treasure and fame. At the same time, one player takes on the role of the Overlord, intent on killing the characters to win the game himself.
Players are provided pre-created adventurers who come in three major classes - warriors, mages and rogues. Each character is also provided a special ability that will aid them in battle. The Overlord gains full control of all the monsters in the game as well as the ability to play traps and curses on the players at any time.
Each turn, players must move through the dungeon, searching for treasure and killing monsters. However, unlike other games, no experience is gained from killing the monsters - instead, heroes must seek to complete the Quest they are on with upgrades of their skills, equipment and armour coming from treasure chests and purchasing them from the town. The Overlord must, in turn, strive to kill the players sufficiently to deter them from completing the quest and thus win.
Descent : Journeys into the Dark is the benchmark game of dungeon crawls at the moment, with modular boards and multiple quests available in the game and for download.

Descent: Journeys into the Dark is our go-to board game if we have a morning/afterno-on to play. Set-up time gets pretty fast once you bag and tag everything properly. The introduction of the Overlord makes it exciting and fun for everyone since each Over Review by TR (Posted on 12/6/08)
