Theme : The Downfall of Pompeii has begun. Smoke is rising from the volcano Vesuvius, and catastrophe is at hand. It all started so well – you populated the city of Pompeii with citizens and everyone was happy. Then, the unthinkable – the volcano blew its’ top and now rivers of lava are heading for the city below. You must race to help as many of your citizens flee as you can, all the while trying to fence off your opponents’ citizens in a blockade of magma. The player who rescues more of their citizens is the winner.
Gameplay : Downfall of Pompeii is a hilarious game of citizen rescue and death. The game is divided into two distinct sections - set up of the city with your loyal citizens and then the volcano explosion phase.
In the first phase, players draw a card and must place their citizen in the respective building. This continues for all players till the first 79 A.D. appears. Cards for all the phases are shuffled into the deck in pre-determined locations, thus ensuring that all players get a minimum number of turns. Once the 79 A.D. card appears, players continue to draw building cards to place their citizens, but also can place other citizens in buildings of the same colour or other neutral buildings. This begins to provide players more control over the events of the game while maintaining a level of randomness to increase re-playability.
The second section of the game begins when the second 79 A.D. card appears. Players discard all the other building cards and begin laying lava tokens starting from six distinct locations. Players first begin by moving their citizens and then placing the lava tokens in an effort to 'destroy' or block other player's citizens.
The winner of the game is the player who rescues the most of his citizens. A fun, hilarious and slightly morbid game, the Downfall of Pompeii has immense replay value and is certain to draw in the crowd.
