A truly amazing game of time management and planning skills, Empire Builder has you racing to deliver goods along the tracks that you must build. Balance upgrades to your train to increase your speed or to carry more goods with being the first to connect 5 of the 6 major American cities with $250 million in your pocket. With over a million variations in the game, Empire Builder is the first of the 'crayon rail' games.
Gameplay: Empire Builder was the first of the 'crayon rail' games which consist of a board that is a map of the country involved. In this case, Empire Builder is based in the United States.
In Empire Builder, you build tracks by drawing in the rail lines using a crayon. Each track costs a specific amount of money, depending on the terrain that you cover. Once a track is complete, players can then send their trains along it to deliver goods between cities as dictated by the 'demand' (cards provided to them) at the time.
Successful deliveries provide additional funds that can be used to create even more tracks or to upgrade your train's engine for additional speed. The balance between developing tracks, upgrading your train and weighing deliveries is what makes the crayon rail games and Empire Builder in particular such a successful series.
