Lord of the Rings - The Confrontation: Deluxe Edition

Theme : Lord of the Rings - The Confrontation (Deluxe Edition) is an combined base game and expansion for the original award-winning Lord of the Rings: the Confrontation board game.

The Deluxe Edition of the Confrontation includes a new, larger game board, sculpted plastic stands and new artwork. In addition, eighteen (18) new characters are added to the original base game. This allows players to mix in the characters to the base game of Confrontation or play an entirely new game with new characters. Lastly, four (4) new Special Cards are also included.

Gameplay : Lord of the Rings: the Confrontation is a tactical board game where players take on the role of the Fellowship or Sauron's hordes. The Confrontation has different winning scenarios, allowing players to work their strategies differently.

The original game is set-up on a diamond shaped board, with the various terrain features of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings displayed on the board. Players then set out their nine characters in either the Shire or Mordor and the surrounding regions. Characters are initially hidden from the other player, enforcing a level of 'bluffing' to the initial game.

Each turn, players move characters through the regions, battling opposing characters if present. Battles progress quickly, with special text read and described (specific characters will automatically win against others - e.g. Merry against the Witch King). At that point, additional Special Cards may be played to affect the combat, with the resulting losers removed from the board. Once one of the victory conditions is met (either Frodo destroying the One Ring, being destroyed himself or the occupation of the Shire), the game is over.

The Deluxe Edition provides a set of new characters on the flip side of all characters provided. These new characters either replace the existing characters or provide different powers for key characters (e.g. Frodo, Sam, the Witch King, Orcs, etc.). The base game and rules however stay the same.
