Product Description
Theme: Memoir '44 is the award winning war game by Days of Wonder that takes place at the end of World War 2 in Western Europe.
Memoir '44 recreates many of the most famous historical battles of World War 2 in a quick-to-learn rules system. An in-depth wargame, Memoir '44 is pulls players in and allows them to use the multiple forces that every commander has to win the battle. A definite must have for war game enthusiasts and for 2 player games.
Gameplay: Memoir '44 is a light wargame by Days of Wonders that uses the 'Command and Colors' system of Richard Borg; found in other popular wargames like Battlelore and Command & Colors Ancients.
The game comes with a double-sided hexagonal board and 17 scenarios. Each scenario comes with custom terrain features which players will be able to build from the hexagonal terrain tiles that are provided in the game as well. Additionally, Days of Wonder has a ton of online scenarios available at any time to increase replay value.
Memoir '44 provides players the array of tanks, artillery and infantry that you would expect of any World War 2 simulation. Rules for movement are extremely simplified in Memoir '44 - e.g. infantry can move two spaces, artillery can move but cannot shoot on the same turn, etc.
Movement and orders in Memoir '44 uses a 'card system' where players play a card, issuing orders to one, two or all three 'regions' on the board (left, middle, center as depicted on the board). These cards will allow players to move a set number of units (or a series of unit types) that turn, with normally only one card played a turn. In this way, Memoir '44 simulates a 'charge' on the left flank or an artillery barrage.
Combat in Memoir '44 is resolved extremely simply and via dice. The number of dice each unit can roll depend son unit type, with terrain and special abilities adjusting the number. Players then roll the dice, counting the number of figures of the attacked unit type that show up and that's their kills for that turn.
Overall, Memoir '44 has some minor additional rules, but this is a great light, easy to learn wargame for those looking for tactical level battles.
