A must have for any Starcraft the board game fan Review by Matt

Though its as expensive as most 'core' games, the Brood War expansion is a must have for any Starcraft the board game fan!

Components:

n the expansion several new planets were included, new buildings to retrofit the old, new and improved player mats (bonus on this one), and many new counters and tokens. All great production quality and I am quiet happy with the result.

I do have two gripes though:
1)The colour do not match the base expansion. They are slightly off, and know that this is a problem with printing things in china, but seriously, its annoying.

2)The sheet that the planet selection tokens (which I think are a great idea) were punched from the wrong direction in the expansion, making it easy to pick them out from the base game tokens. This is a good and bad thing as I find its better to have one base game + one expansion planet when in playing. Some of the expansion planets are really resource deprived which I have issue with.

Game Play Changes:

New combat cards are added to the game to re-balance existing units and provide cards for the new brood war units added in the expansion. A new 'Defend' order was also added to help those more 'turtle'/defensively minded players. All the brood war units from the original video game are added furthering different viable strategies for each faction to use during game play.

The biggest change was the addition of faction unique leadership cards tiered for each stage of the game. What I like about this is that is further distinguishes each of the factions more (especially the same pairings). Each of these leadership cards has an affect on how you play the faction, either providing for the new Hero units or some sort of meta game play affect. These alone are the greatest reason as to why to get this expansion.

New support modules were added to the game which was a nice touch. Having more options than those able to be taken in a single game is always a good thing and changes the predictability of outcome for each game.

The new planets added to the game add several new special rules (regions that are air or land only as well as areas that if controlled provide a free gold order a turn) which was a nice touch. This changes the game up slightly with greater planet diversity.

Finally the last nice touch to the game was the addition of Scenarios. Something that I wish that the FFG website would support the create of like they have for their Descent game line.

Conclusion:

An expensive expansion for an already expensive game, but most likely if you spent the money on the core game, you will justify the cost for the expansion.

The changes to the rules and new units adds much replay-ability to the core game making it a great investment to increase the life span of this already great game.
