- Even more races Review by KR
-
Small World Curse does what most of the other expansions do, they provide you with additional races and special powers. There are two new races (Goblins and Kobolds) and give new special powers (Cursed, Ransacking, Hordes Of, Were, and Maurauding). As with the other expansions I do like additional races and special powers but my one negative about this expansion is that there are only two new races. I personally prefer more races over special powers. All in all though, it's still a good little expansion that adds more variety to the game. Having really enjoyed Small World upon starting to play it, I was extremely excited when I found out that there were expansions on the way - as I figured the more races and powers, the merrier. However, when I got the Cursed expansion, I wasn't quite as satisfied as I had hoped.Quality Price Value
Cursed comes with two new races (Kobolds and Goblins), and five new powers (Were-, Cursed, Ransacking, Hordes of, and Marauding). While the other powers and races seem to have been very well thought, these were based on submissions from players, and some of them don't seem to be especially well balanced.
Were- allows you to be extra strong on alternating turns, on the basis of it being "night", which doesn't fit the theme of expanding and contracting civilizations at all. Ransacking, which takes away a coin from the owner of each region you defeat can be hugely overpowering, especially in a two player game. Cursed makes your player considerably worse and will only be taken once a number of coins have been placed on throughout other turns.
Kobolds are kind of like ratmen, in that you get many of them, but you require at least two on each region at all times. Goblins can defeat in decline races with one less token than normally required.
Overall, I just wasn't very excited about these expansions. While it's nice to add more variety and options into the combinations, unless you're playing a lot of Small World, I'm not convinced these expansions are necessary. (Posted on 1/7/10)
