Who needs Zooloretto when you have Coloretto? Review by Murray

I was pleasantly surprised when I tried our Coloretto. The main mechanic of the award winning parent game, Zooloretto, had been transferred incredibly well into the card game.

This mechanic, of course, is the loading and taking of trucks. Whereas in Zooloretto you turn over random tiles to load onto a truck, in Coloretto you turn over the top card of the deck to load a truck. The hard choice between taking a truck and choosing the hand of fate is the main tension driver in Zooloretto and it transfers well into the card game.

So well, in fact, that I must say that it has satisfied my craving for Zooloretto. I was never a super huge fan of the parent game and Coloretto, perfectly carrying the essence of the game into a portable card form, makes a much better addition to my collection.

If you had enjoyed Zooloretto, but not enough to warrant a purchase of the game, give Coloretto a try. It's a smaller investment in both cash and time and I feel that it's worth it. (Posted on 12/4/09)
Great game for Lost Cities lovers Review by Jasmine

If you love to play Lost Cities, this is probably a great game for you. There is a huge amount of card counting in this game, aside from the basic initial card counting require to keep track of how many cards there are left in the deck so that you can plan for the end game. You also keep track of the different colors, wild cards, bonus cards, in order to predict accurate what your odds are when turning over a card.

This is important because only your top three performing colors add to your score, your other piles will subtract from your score. This makes card counting and playing the odds very important. It also makes the game fun as you will have lots of choices that weigh in cost and benefits. Sometimes you will score big, other times you won't.

Luckily, all the cards played are displayed face up so that, in a glance, you can keep track of the cards and really only need to keep the deck count in your head. However, because all the cards are played face up and there is a need for a middle area for loading the trucks, Coloretto actually takes up a surprising amount of space for a quick and simple card game.

And Coloretto is quick. This helps in the card counting aspect as you won't have to track numbers for too long. Like Lost Cities, most games are played over a pre-determined number of rounds and the scores are added together.

Whether you are a Zooloretto fan or a Lost Cities fan, this game is great and highly enjoyable. (Posted on 11/23/09)
Zooloretto lite.....really fun quick card game Review by Austen

If you have played Zooloretto then you will already know how to play Coloretto and once you have played Coloretto you will be able to walk straight into Zooloretto. They use the same basic mechanism, the difference being that in Coloretto you have coloured cards and in Zooloretto you have animals.

I find I almost enjoy Coloretto more than Zooloretto. It is a fun light hearted card game, but not light hearted enough that you can't screw people over. There is nothing more satisfying than making someone eat cards they don't want.

The Screamin Castle Varient:
Unless they have change the decks when you buy Coloretto you will get a mystery card that is not mentioned in the rules. It has what looks like a screaming castle on it. No one really seems to know what it is for. We have found a varient that uses this card in a fun way. Shuffle the Castle card into your deck with the other cards. If you get the Castle card at the end of the game you can use the castle to eat any one card. This can be huge as if you have a 4th colour you can either eliminate it if you only have one card or if you have 2 or 3 cards of a forth colour you can reduce the amount of points that will count against you.

Once you start playing Coloretto with the Sreamin Castle you won't be able to play without it. (Posted on 11/11/09)

Coloretto is fun, quick to teach (literally less than 2 minutes) and highly strategic. It's a set-collection game that has a lot of interaction and tactical decision making, but very little direct confrontation. This helps reduce the ill-feelings that a card game can result in.

If there is one aspect of the game that might detract from it, is the variable 'end-game' card. There is no way to plan for the end-game and games can last nearly the entire deck or end within 2 rounds. That can be an issue for some gaming groups. (Posted on 12/6/08)
