- Good addon to the basic game Review by Newson

The first Catan I played was the basic 3-4 player version. When my friends and I got together to play games it was difficult to incorporate more people as there are usually 5-6 of us. But with this expansion it allows more people to enjoy the game as well.Quality Price Value
The board after it is fully built gives an illusion that there is enough space for everyone to spread out but it is quick to fill up with your opponent's roads and settlements. The extra building doesn't let harm any particular player who has enjoyed good dice role to be victimized by the robber. Strategy and game play is basically the same but can be enjoyed with more people without affected the length of play. The extra colored pieces also give those who loves a certain color more variability. I think this is a must have for anyone who loves the catan series and regularly get together with a larger group of people. This expansion increases the number of players that can be played with the base game to 6 players. It adds some additional rules to speed up the game for six players, but the only real value you get is just additional habour pieces, resource and water tiles. In my opinion, this is clearly a money grab. It's entirely plausible that the base game was originally designed to be for 4 players. So when a 5-6 player expansion for the base game came out, it was clear that the creators had thought of a way to expand the game for more players. So instead of making the future editions of the base game for up to 6 players, the 5-6 player expansion still persisted and this idea was transferred to all the other Settler expansions requiring you to have a 5-6 expansion if you want to play with more than 4 players. And the most frustrating thing about this is that there is no way around this.Price Value Quality
(Posted on 1/3/11) - Turn your regular Catan into an epic Review by Louis

Settlers of Catan has become synonymous with board games. The 5 and 6 player expansion does just what it says, up to two more players can take a shot at Settling on the island of Catan.Price Value Quality
With two more players, this is probably the best way to play Catan. Even though it makes the game longer, which some might not appreciate, it certainly changes the trading dynamic as more people get involved in the mix. It changes the game by making every game an evening long epic game, with people constantly struggling for resources and placement of their roads and settlements. But with 5 people to play before the next turn, a player's strategy might change when it's their turn because of the amount of progress that has happened in the meantime. Most of my gaming groups include more then 5 players so Catan does'nt get to the table very often. With this expansion I get to enjoy it with a bigger crowd. To counter the obvious addition of down time and the giant hands of cards a few rules where added. The new rules are very simple and do not add to the complexity of the game. Two more people adds fun to the game and even more interactions. This is a good family game so if you have more ten four members in yours this is a good game to buy. I suppose I've become a bit of a purist. The first game of Settlers that I have ever played was a 6 player affair and I had lots of fun. Since then, I've been steadily playing the game in a more serious manner and have even competed. As such, I have slowly developed a kind of hesitance towards Settler games that exceed 4 players.Price Value Quality
In order to accommodate the extra players, things like General Build were added to the game which I feel takes away some of the watertight design elements that the original game had. For small households, it can sometimes be hard enough to get the requisite 3 players for a game.
However, for social gatherings and similar purposes, this expansion does the job well. As I said before, I was introduced to Settlers (and, as a consequence, serious board gaming) while playing with this expansion and I did have lots of fun and got hooked. If you're expecting regular guests, then I do recommend this expansion. (Posted on 12/18/08)
