- A very fun game with little player interaction Review by KR
-
I find Thebes to be a very fun game to play with a certain type of group. I know many people who only like games that have high competition and lots of player interactions and lots of chances to screw your opponents over. If you only enjoy those types of games than Thebes is not for you.Price Value Quality
In Thebes, you play an archaeologist traveling the globe and searching for treasures. The mechanic I really enjoyed is that you, as the player, get to chose how long your game lasts. Every action takes a certain number of time to preform and so you have to balance your time management to get the highest points. For example, when you go to do a dig for treasures you choose how long you want to dig for. The longer the time, the more you can search for treasures; however, you have to be careful because each player only gets a set number of time to use so once you're out of time your personal game is over and you must wait for others to finish. By the end of the time cycle whoever has the most points wins the game.
Digging for treasures is a lot of fun as well. There is a coloured bag for each of the 5 dig destinations. Depending on the number of "weeks" you are digging for, you pull pieces out of the bag. In the bag there are pieces with treasure on them as well as pieces of dirt. If you obtain a treasure piece you place it in front of you but any dirt you pick is useless and goes back in the bag.
As I mentioned earlier, there is very little player interaction and very little chances to screw your opponent over. I would say that the level of competition would be similar to Ticket to Ride. All in all I found Thebes to be a very fun game or time management and resource management and if you enjoy lighter games with less competition than this may be the game for you. Excellent design and lots of fun. Better played with 3+ as it gives an additional unknown element of where players will go and what they will pickup between turns. Having 50% of the items to be pulled as dirt makes the game more challenging and amusing. The more players the longer the game. With a full game it can be an entire evening of fun. This game has a pretty good balance of luck and strategy although being really lucky can get you a win. The basis is to collect enough knowledge and help about certain dig sites so that you can find artifacts through digging for treasure, or actually drawing a random disk from a bag and hoping that you have an artifact or something helpful opposed to a bunch of dirt. You have to use time management to get the most artifacts and victory points through collecting knowledge, digging for artifacts and showing your prizes off. The game is clean and laid out well, very entertaining. (Posted on 9/27/10)Price Value Quality
