The Hive is a fun and quick little game with nice and durable pieces. This can be played on any flat surface, required it is not prone to sudden stops. The fact that the game come ready with a traveling bag makes this a great traveling companion. (Posted on 3/16/10)

Hive is a great 2 player only game that plays a lot like Go and Chess combined. The goal of the game is to completely encircle your opponent's Queen Bee. This can be done with any combination of your pieces and theirs. The twist is that each of your pieces have different movement styles and abilities, much like the different pieces in Chess. Grasshoppers jump, Beetles sit on other bugs, etc.

The game is relatively easy to learn and offers plenty of tactical and strategic depth. I recommend playing with tournament rules where you are not allowed to place the Queen Bee as your first move as this will eliminate a lot of draw games.

The game pieces are excellent and durable, being made of bakelite. It also comes with a nifty travel bag, making the game extremely portable. The only real big problem with Hive is the bug theme. Bugs make some people, like girlfriends, squeamish, and turns them off from the game, which is a shame since the game is pretty fun. If you really like this game, I recommend getting some stickers to cover the bugs. (Posted on 10/2/09)
