This game was surprisingly different from what I first expected. It is not simply a space-themed remake of Battleship, and indeed it barely has anything to do with the classic game. But what it did keep from the original Battleship (the A-H / 1-8 grid) was used in a remarkably well thought-out manner.
The game is fun and well-paced, and comes with a number of interesting scenarios to play. The pieces are of good quality (the miniatures are the same pre-painted flexible plastic kind as the Axis & Allies miniatures games), and both sides have their own unique fleets with completely different play styles. Also the two game boards make for a nice, large playable area.
The greatest downside is the small number of actual miniatures included with the game. For what Galaxies costs, they could have easily doubled the number of ships for each side. Being a Wizards of the Coast / Avalon Hill game, there are likely to be future expansions which could add more ships, or possibly a third / fourth player to the game.
Overall, a little pricey, but still a good game, and one which will get much better if Hasbro does release add-ons.
