Product Description
Theme : The Cities & Knights of Catan is the second major expansion of the award winning game Settlers of Catan series. The Cities & Knights expansion includes new barbarian hordes and expanded city rules which give players new ways to gain victory points.
The 4th edition of Cities & Knights of Catan from Mayfair features all new graphics - new card, box and tile art and revised and improved full colour rule books for easier understanding.
Requires the Settlers of Catan base game to play.
Gameplay : In the Cities and Knights expansion, players are now able to develop their cities further and specialize each city. In the Cities and Knights of Catan variant game, players start out with a city and a settlement straight away. Each city also comes with a flip chart that shows the city's commerce, military and political development.
Along with the introduction of a new city and its development tracks, three new commodities are introduced. These are cloth (from pastures), coin (from mountains) and paper (from forests). Cities continue to produce 2 brick and 2 grain in their respective hexes but now produce 1 resource and 1 commodity in the other three terrain types. These commodities can then be used to develop the city along the appropriate commerce, military and political tracks on the flip chart. These tracks can provide a large bonus, but as always, players have only a limited amount of resources in Catan.
Furthermore, Knights are now more important than ever as the Barbarian Hordes will ransack and damage cities throughout the game. The movement of the Barbarians are controlled by the introduction of a new die that has three black ships (moving the barbarians) and three castles (for the development tracks in the city). Instead of the old progress deck in Settlers, three new decks appropriate to each development track are now provided.
To help balance the new head start players have and the various new routes to victory, Cities and Knights of Catan now finishes at 12 Victory Points instead of 13. The entire expansion provides for longer, more involved play than the base game which can definitely change the thrill for many players.
