In Settlers of Catan, you are one of four competing immigrant groups to the new land of Catan. You compete to become the dominant power by building cities and settlements throughout the continent. Players must choose which lands they will develop next to and how best to utilise the resources the land provides them to become the dominant power in Catan.
The 4th edition of Settlers of Catan from Mayfair has all new graphics and a new interlocking tile-map that will keep your game board from scattering from every movement.
The 4th Edition of Settlers comes with nineteen (19) new redesigned land hexes with unique artwork on each hex and an interlocking sea board. Furthermore, the game comes with an insert tray that will fit all your basic components and the components for the 5 & 6 player expansion.
Gameplay : Settlers of Catan is a resource management and trading board game. It uses a modular game board which consists of hexes depicting the various land types. These hexes are shuffled at the beginning of each game and spread out in an hexagonal pattern to represent the land of Catan.
At the beginning of each game of Settlers of Catan, players decide on which lands they will build their settlements on with each land type (forest, pasture, mountains and fields) providing a different resource.
Land hexes produce on a roll of a pair of dice, with each land hex provided a number ranging from 2 to 12. The dice rolls determine which resources are produced and players who have settlements and cities alongside these lands gain the appropriate resources.
Players compete to build roads, settlements and cities using the resources produced by the land to gain Victory Points. In addition, players can purchase from the Settlers development deck which provides a variety of additional events that will benefit the players.
While the rules and gameplay of the Settlers of Catan can be learned within 10 minutes, the modular board, the random dice rolls and the negotiation and trading between players gives the game a new flavor every time. It's no wonder that Settlers of Catan continues to sell well over a decade and half since it's introduction.

Excellent game. Game system/mechanic easy to learn but game system, personal interaction, through trading mechanism, and random element, through resource dice roll, make game a facinatingly complex stategy game; ie, if you make bad decisions you will lose Review by nonentity (Posted on 1/17/09)

The first time I was introduced to Settlers of Catan, I was in university. The Sci-Fi club I was in met once a week at a pub and Settlers was a popular game to pass the time. It did not take me long to get hooked on the game – 5 minutes in, about as long Review by TR (Posted on 12/5/08)
