Product Description

Theme : On the island of Taluva, four tribes compete for the favour of the gods and their survival. They will explore the jungles, beaches and lakes to build their huts, temples and towers and pray that the gods are merciful on them.

Gameplay : In Taluva, players take on the role of one of the four tribes and act as their god. They will organise the movement of the tribe on their turn, exploring and building on the island while developing it at the same time.

Taluva is a tile-laying game in the vein of Carcassonne. Each turn, players have two actions that they take - draw and place a tile and then build buildings.

Tiles are made up of three hexes with one hex always being a Volcano. The other two hexes have a variety of landscapes on them including jungles, fields, lagoons, beaches and rocks. Tiles, after the initial start of the game, can actually be played on one another, partially overlapping the tile that was there before them. This depicts the flow of lava in the game, creating new lands and increasing the height of the board.

During the building phase, players may build huts, temples and towers on available land if the requirements are met. They may also expand their settlements, allowing them to place multiple huts on each adjacent landscape of the same type (e.g. on all beaches) including vertically! This allows for a geometric increase in the size of a settlement.

To win Taluva, players have three ways to win - they can have more temples at the end of the game, have built two of each building type or ensure that other players are unable to place any buildings on their turn. This is possible as huts are never returned to hand when a new tile is laid on existing settlements.

Overall, Taluva is an interesting tile-laying board game that is step-up in strategic options from Carcassonne. While still easy to learn, it provides additional building options and strategies for players while staying to the tile-laying and building concept.
